  • If you don’t know less than 50% of Americans have a passport. The ones who don’t, I really see the limitation in their thinking.

why do you think it’s a thinking problem? applying for a passport costs money. travelling to another country costs even more money. not everyone has had access to the same opportunities.

anyways. i haven’t gotten to travel out of the US, but it certainly ain’t because i wouldn’t like to. it just isn’t financially feasible for a lot of people here.

  • a legal monopoly on violence is the cornerstone of the states power. while there are definitely valid reasons to want to restrict access to the tools of violence, the state will always have that access, and if it restricts the general populations access to same, it becomes far easier to oppress them.

also, if we’re gonna ban weapons, i’d like to start with SUVs.

  • i guess it was just too petty to even consider. i wouldn’t have guessed anyone would read that much into something as trivial as a handful of downvotes. calling everyone ‘pathetic’, ‘triggered’ and ‘unable to take criticism’ over something as minor as downvotes honestly hadn’t occured to me. as you say, downvotes are cheap.

  • well, for one thing, using ai image generation is supporting a business model that’s whole thing is ripping off artists, even if you personally aren’t turning a profit. and for another, if an image is used in a meme, it is not that hard to do a reverse image search to find the original, if it was posted online, whereas the blended chicken nugget ooze that is the output of image generators specifically defies attribution.

also, there’s the fact that artists often like it when people like their art, even if it would be better to provide attribution. i don’t think i’ve ever seen anyone argue that slapping some text on an image for a meme hurts the original artists ability to make a living, but tons of artists have noted such an effect from ai slop extruders.

  • most clients allow you to sort posts and comments using different algorithms. what you’re describing is generally referred to as ‘top’, but a lot of clients default to ‘hot’, which i believe focuses more on recent activity rather than overall upvotes. i personally almost always sort by ‘new’, but my client, thunder, also gives options for ‘old’ and ‘controversial’.

edit: and posts also get the option of selecting a time frame for ‘top’, and also get a ‘scaled’, ‘active’ ‘most comments’, and ‘new comments’ sorting options.
