Instead of dismissing Signal, I wonder if it could be changed to support a federated model.
Just a thought, because Signal has seen widespread adoption. Getting people to change their messenger is hard.

The headline is clickbait.

The GUI? Sure. Check out Zorin OS. Not to your liking? There’s others.
Steam? Mostly, yes. If you have a specific game in mind, a quick Internet search will answer that for you. In my case, 98% of games run (incl. most AAA games).
Good news: you don’t need anti virus on Linux (at least not at this point in time). If you really want to, there’s decent options. But I yet have to encounter an infected Linux machine. Infected Windows machines, on the other hand, are easy to find. With Linux, your security will go up considerably, coming from Windows.

Sure, but you don’t have control. If Microsoft decides that you are not allowed to disable this any longer, you will be left with no true choice.
That’s what Google does with Android, bending everyone to their will, not caring how we feel about any of their policies.
Why would MS be different? Just look at the numerous features Windows 11 removed as compared to 10. Did they give me a choice? Or what about their promise that Windows 10 will be the last Windows? Or what about them forcing people to buy new hardware to run Windows 11?
Trying to disable this stuff ultimately just sugarcoats the ever growing frustrations of using a system that locks down further with every passing year.

What holds you back? Go for it now.

Not worth considering. Even if one can disable it now, we can’t trust that they won’t disable that option eventually.
Just use Linux and these questions become “Oh no. Anyways…”.
Work. Sadly Linux cannot run most Windows Store apps.
And there’s some niche software that runs, but crashes too much for my liking. So unfortunately in these cases: Windows.
Moved family mostly to Zorin. I stay with Tumbleweed.
Keeping Windows on dual boot for some edge cases. For the app or two that doesn’t run with Linux I keep Windows in a virtual machine (which sadly I need once or twice a day).
95% of my daily business runs on Linux.
Now I wish my phone would do that too.

You think that’s bad?
Just wait. Soon there will be a lot of other things you want but won’t be able to do anymore.

I loved Mint. It’s still great. Recently I installed Linux on a family member’s laptop which is not upgradeable to Windows 11. Hate to say it (and I may be a bit petty here): Mint looks dated, Cinnamon needs a facelift.
That was a reason I went with Zorin. It clearly tries to transition users that come from Windows with it’s design (honestly, it’s modded Gnome looks awesome). Even running .exe files is as simple as just opening them. Zorin will either just run them or suggest a Linux alternative. Had no issues with that OS so far.
That said, Mint or Ubuntu are solid choices for beginners (and pros alike).

It is. But dreams are what future realities are made of.

Titanium Backup is the exception for me. All the others… 🤷♂️🙋♂️

Pretty much everyone, or at least many purple, will need this eventually (although it is likely shortsighted of banks to lock into a system provided by one or two companies HQ’d in the same country).
So I hope a solution will be found. But this is just one of the issues why a Linux phone isn’t quite there yet. At least not for me. Wish it were.

Thanks. It looks like a start, an enthusiast’s phone.
For now. Here is a review.
It clearly needs development. But it has the potential for greatness. Banking apps really need to work, for example (as much as I hate banks relying on phone 2FA or some banks only having an app apart from a feeble website).

If truly wish that were the way forward.
As it stands, name a good one that works with current apps and isn’t a battery hog. 🤷♂️

Just when I thought that I cannot possibly hate Google even more, I see D. Veloper.
I truly hope they don’t retire it until there’s a true successor. Yast is in its own class of admin tools.
Guess what they look like on my 250 Dollar dumb fridge.
I can even keep my food chilled with it. Plus I can freeze stuff. Even has a light when I open the door. Super practical. You guys should come see it!
