- Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus, are exploring the possibility of developing versions of the Android operating system that do not rely on Google Mobile Services (GMS). - Clickbait title. They’re rumored to fork Android which will still just be Android without the Google suite. - Huawei has already produced an OS which is not a fork of Android. - Meh, that is just changing one tech giant for another. Both spy on you completely. It is not like either will be better for the consumer.
- Well… At least they claim to.

- Phones will still use android, but manufacturers are looking to de-google android so it’s not as heavily reliant on google services. - A example is the removal of the required Google play store. - Laptop manufacturers are also looking to move away from windows to a linux bases operating system. - TBH this is the best news I have heard all week. - I’d be great with that. I don’t want Google on my phone. - Also I’m looking for a new laptop in the coming years and there’s no way I’m putting Windows on it. I’ve been poking around and there are actually a lot of options for Linux laptops now! - I’m very happy. - This comment sounds like an Ad. Or some AI bs canned response. - An ad for what?

- Its not about Google services, its because the US government may prohibit foreign manufacturers from using Android. - Don’t sleep on Google Services. - If you’re not an iPhone user, those “services” are what keeps Google from killing Android entirely. Waaaayyyy too much data collection to just brush your shoulders off over.

- deleted by creator - Chromebooks have entered the chat

- Shift away from - AndroidGoogle
- Problem is, we’ll be getting even worse spyware with the backing of the Chinese government. - Call me what you will, but I would prefer my data goes to china over the current administration. - deleted by creator - In this parallel universe? You have better chances of finding a way to go to another one AND convince your counterpart to switch places so they will be here. - deleted by creator

- That would be cool, but I doubt that would be a reality without either dropping tech completely or investing a shit ton of time learning to create a fully local and secured setup. - deleted by creator - Thanks for the advice, I’ll take a look into that and see what it entails.

- Lol, so you were fine with Google spying with all the prior administrations back to 2000… - There is some strong evidence that Google was created with strong ties to the NSA… During the Clinton administration. You were OK with that? - That would be saying you were OK with the creation of this spying behemoth because it was under an admin you agreed with. - I’m not OK with it, regardless of which admin it was. It’s not a good thing, and at a minimum violates the spirit of law. - Damn, that was a ton of assumptions off of one sentence. I just feel like there is a lot more realistic risk in personal data going to a government I live under than one I don’t. - Also, I think you are aware that this administration operates a bit differently than previous ones.

- Just for the record, every single company that is selling a phone in China (this includes Samsung) is already running a degoogled fork of android
- deleted by creator - and companies would just give up trying to design a separate app for the Chinese market - I’m not so sure about that. Some of these brands (and their sub-brands) enjoy significant market share outside of China. I suspect it would be in their financial interests to continue to maintain “global” versions.

- Lineage OS maybe?
- Good. Been looking for a reason to not use a smartphone. I’d rather piss glass than use iOS
