At least in MN the way it works is that vehicles over a certain age can be registered as collectors vehicles and get special lifetime collectors plates. If you register a vehicle as a collectors vehicle then it doesn’t need any updated emissions or safety equipment. But at the same time it is illegal to use a collectors vehicle for daily driving. You are only permitted to drive it to/from shows/events and to take it on occasional pleasure drives. If you get caught making a grocery run with one then you get fined, the plates impounded, and you could even face jail time.
This seems to work out pretty well here. It’s pretty uncommon to see these vehicles on the road outside of big events. And it doesn’t require owners to modify their classic vehicles when many pride themselves on keeping these vehicles as stock as possible.
Edit: Also ethanol isca very bad idea for these vehicles. Firstly the seals and hoses on these vehicles are not designed for it so it destroys them, as someone else aluded to. But more importantly, these vehicles aren’t being driven regularly and ethanol is not stable to leave in the vehicles. When it ages ethanol breaks down into a varnish that covers everything and clogs the hell out of things like carburators. That is the reason that you want to use nonoxygenated gas (no ethanol added) on vehicles that aren’t driven frequently. Ethanol is the main thing that makes gas go bad. If you don’t have ethanol in there then the shelf life is extended dramatically. If you ran these vehicles on ethanol you would basically be requiring people to drain and dry every fuel carrying component whenever they wanted to store it (which should be often if you don’t want them daily driving them).
It’s only regularly spoken by a minority but most can and will break it out on ocassion. It’s always fun to do on vacation.
Well, I live on the Minnesota side of the Minnesota / Wisconsin border and normally I can tell I crossed the border because I have to cross the 4th largest river in the world, the Mississippi river.
Joking aside a big tell used to be frac sand mines. Minnesota cracked down on them much harder much more quickly than Wisconsin so you would see them all over the place in Wisconsin but not in MN. I haven’t seen as many of those lately though. Also If I drive too far south I wind up driving out of the Kwik Trip gas station zone and into the vastly inferior Caseys gas station zone in Iowa.
I was responding to this exchange.
Specifically not talking about evaporative cooling.
Anything using heat exchangers is going to be closed loop so the water use use there is negligible. It’s just the same water being pumped in a loop. Chiller systems are not the issue here and should actually be encouraged because they make far more efficient use of refrigerant than conventional cooling systems.
To be fair, you do get a bit of a boy who cried wolf situation going on with those warnings. I work with several chemicals where the SDS says that any skin exposure requires you to immediately go to a hospital. In reality, it’s literally just an acid which has no health effects other than possible burns and from my experience you basically need to soak your hands in it for half an hour straight before you start risking burns.
Reddit had great HVAC and Refrigeration subs that I miss. The HVAC com here is basically completely inactive. Honestly there are so few tradies on lemmy, it would be nice to just see all the tradie coms consolidated into one so there is some activity.
Pretty sure there is a bpd community.
Edit: There are two but one hasn’t been active in more than a year. This one is the most active. https://lemmy.world/c/bpd
No, you’ve got it all wrong. It’s good opera etiquette to jerk off at the opera to show that you’re enjoying it. Etiquette doesn’t demand the preopera wank; it’s just so you have better endurance for your proper opera wank.
Yep, emissions regulations are based entirely on wheelbase. If you have a truck which has the same wheelbase as a car then it is held to the same emissions standards as a car. The larger the wheelbase is the more lax the emissions standards are. This and the chicken tax are why the US doesn’t have small trucks anymore.
Slimy hands.
The thing is that predictability is always key when you’re driving no mater the situation. These are the same people who dont take their fucking right of way and wind up slowing down everyone. These are the same people who will stop inside a roundabout to let someone in and wind up causing a traffic jam.
Being “nice” behind the wheel is just being an asshole because you want to pat yourself on the back. Don’t be “nice” while driving, be predictable.
ITER is still well under way as far as fusion goes. I doubt room temp super conductors will ever be a thing though. If we can get a metalic material which superconducts above the boiling point of nitrogen then that will be world changing enough.
That’s usually legally defined somewhere depending on your location. Wher I am it’s defined based on rated power output of the motor.
The earth is just a bunch of interacting fields.
Nope, this is the exact reason I have the vents for every room but my bedroom blocked. AC is expensive and I don’t care if the rest of the house cooks, but I need my bedroom to be cold at night. Kinda just want to build a refrigerated box bed.
They use adiabatic coolers to minimize electrical cost for cooling and maximize cooling capacity. The water isn’t directly used as the cooling fluid. It’s just used to provide evaporative cooling to boost the efficiency of a conventional refrigeration system. I also suspect that many of them are starting to switch to CO2 based refrigeration systems which heavily benefit from adiabatic gas coolers due to the low critical temp of CO2. Without an adiabatic cooler the efficiency of a CO2 based system starts dropping heavily when the ambient temp gets much above 80F.
They could acheive the same results without using water, however their refrigeration systems would need larger gas coolers which would increase their electricity usage.
A lot of units now a days have a plastic coating on the discharge gas pipe which mostly prevents the corrosion issue. I am a refrigeration mechanic and while the condensate pan is one of the first areas I check for leaks, it also isn’t the most common area. It probably ranks in third place for frequencybof leaks on reach in units. I probably get 10x more leaks right in the evap coils. People just tend to notice the condensate pan leaks more because they’re on the high pressure side of the system so they’re going to be quick and relatively dramatic. Evap leaks can fly under the radar for years because they’re usually small and only result in gradually worsening performance.
There are also alternative condensate pan designs which use sheets of a wicking felt like material standing up in the condensate pan to increase the surface area for evaporation. That plus the warm air from the condenser fan can often work just as well as the discharge gas heated pans without the corosion issues. The reason that more companies don’t do that is because using the discharge gas for evaporating condensation also means that you’re using the condensation to precool the discharge gas so it slightly boosts the efficiency of the unit.
Wait, when did this become a thing? I’ve had developer mode turned on on my phone for ages without any issues.
