  • I think there’s no way to tell if most people would enjoy math under the right circumstances but in my case you are absolutely right. Back in school I hated it, didn’t wan’t to find out more or even retain what I had to learn for tests.

That changed drastically when I studied philosophy. I learned about scholars there who “practiced” math in an almost spiritual way. Just by engaging with it, exploring this abstract world and uncovering its mysteries. Even if you don’t take it quite this far philosophy and math are very closely related. It’s probably gonna be tough for someone without a rough grasp of essential mathematical concepts to engage with metaphysics or formal logic.

Now that I’m a mechatronics technician I even need math in my day to day life, a lot more than I had ever anticipated. And I like it. I like how no matter how counterintuitive the method, if math says it works then it will. It’s not just an abstract world of it’s own, it’s also woven into our world wherever you look.

  • About 15 years ago I googled “free games download” and stumbled upon a 3rd person gladiator game where mouse movement translated to slashing direction. Playing it was already fun but when I looked through the install folder I found all the texture files and customized the hell out of all the equipment. Basically this game was my first attempt at modding which has been a hobby of mine ever since. No idea what its name was or where I could look for it though.

  • To me if it’s done purely for the attention of others rather than intrinsically motivated it’s childish. A general lack of responsibility is also childish. Tamer stuff like trinket collections, lewd jokes, cartoons and whatnot in my opinion is enjoyable independently of age. If anything judging those things as childish could be seen as childish. Who’s more obsessed with seeming all grown up than kids?

  • Really there’s not much you can/should do. You can try to get along with her or distance yourself for now. There’s a good chance the problem will solve itself in time. Personally I think it’s a pretty huge age gap but if they really just met randomly and hit it off without pressure then honestly whatever. There are worse things going on in the world than two people under the warm covers of a bed. People are very sensitive about age gaps in modern western society (don’t get me wrong, I think that’s a good thing) but other concepts do exist and reality isn’t always as black and white as we would like it to be.
