Look at Bruno. Its open source, though I did get pay walled the other day and it pissed me off.

30·13 days agoYou remember when IOT had so much potential? Now i won’t buy anything smart that shouldnt be. And I generally try to buy hardware with an open stack.
We don’t have to live like this.

1·16 days agoOh God I didn’t think of that. I feel like Linus is ornery enough to stop that, but they won’t live forever.
Edit: also what did I get wrong!? I haven’t taken an OS class in years and my only exposure to binary formats has been reverse engineering toy files

2·18 days agoRight? They can still have their closed ecosystem and get their monthly check from your bank, but they could get out of the operating system business. I bet that is an expensive one with low revenue

1·18 days agoAbi means application binary interface. Iirc it is a convention basically on how the operating system expects system calls to be made.
That is a fancy way of saying it’s how programs can use the operating system.
Linux does it one way and windows does it another. It is apart of why we can’t run windows programs on Linux.
Executable format is another big reason, I’m sure there are many.

3·19 days agoI wouldn’t hate a closed windows ecosystem on Linux. We would get the kernel patches and more software would work. Even if we didn’t get kernel patches because windows is scummy and ignores the gpl, a common abi would still be amazing

9·19 days agoThere were rumours that windows would become a Linux desktop environment for a while, I can see the business case for it but the migration seems impossible

14·1 month agoThere are consumer exoskeletons in the US these days.
Steam deck is a closed ecosystem so it is likely tied to the file system and bundled libraries.
It would likely take a little work to get it working on other distros, but the underlying binary is now going to be elf and use the correct system calls
Edit:
Closed ecosystem is not the right word. Probably known system is a better way of saying it

Me too. We should just do it. The biggest issue is making sure landscaping doesn’t mow them down imo
