  • I used VirtualBox on Linux to host my Home Assistant server for a while. I kept having odd issues with usb devices. I’d have to disconnect and reconnect them to get them working again.

Many people in the HA help groups say not to use VirtualBox, and at first I thought they were basing that on old info. But then I started having issues, too. On the other hand, kvm has been rock solid for a long time.

So I’m glad to see they continue to develop it, but I wouldn’t recommend it for heavy duty use. It’s useful to dipping toes into virtualization, or maybe for running systems for the short term (a few hours here and there, or something), but for long term use, I’d go another route. It’s certainly easier to set up the network in VirtualBox, I’ll grant that - it took me a while to get it right for HA on kvm. (Of course, that’s a one-time setup thing, too - I shouldn’t have to touch it again. And don’t ask me what I did, because I don’t remember!)

  • Hard. I scheduled a 51 mile ride for our club, but only one other person signed up. He’s a slower rider than I usually am, so I took my heavy steel gravel bike instead of one of my usual aluminum or carbon fiber race bikes.

We had a nice conversational pace ride averaging 15.8 mph over that distance. (Last time we did that route, I was on the road bike, and I averaged 18.7 mph. But we had more people, and some of them are pretty strong.)

But man it felt so hard. Just felt like I was struggling all day. I had a snack about 15 miles in and kind of mentally reset - refocus on spinning the pedals, not grinding it out. From there I felt better, but it never felt like an easy ride.

Last weekend we did a four day, 315 mile tour (at an easy pace, not a race), so I might just be struggling from that yet, too. I felt good when I rode Tuesday night, but Thursday morning on zwift felt pretty difficult, even though I wasn’t pushing hard. I probably should have taken a rest day today.

Tomorrow, my wife and I and a few others are running a rest stop for a local charity ride. A nearby restaurant supplies bread pudding as a treat for the riders (and us). It’s so good! Of course we also have other snacks, water, gatoraid, pickles, etc. Coincidentally, one of the owners for the bike shop I work at will be providing mechanical support at the same rest stop.

    The Biketoberfest looks fun.

    1. Restricted airspace. They’d never fly in the immediate DC area, for example - it’s mostly a no-go zone with exceptions for National Airport and College Park Airports. The restricted zone actually extends beyond the beltway - which excludes the space where traffic is worst and flying cars would be most useful. (Freeway airport in Bowie has a section of the restricted zone carved out for it, but the airport is closing.) Even if you are authorized to fly into the zone, it’s not as simple as, “Hey today I need to drive to Georgetown.”

DC might be an extreme example, but I assume many cities have restrictions on flights above them.

  • When I upgraded the desktop and laptop machines, I didn’t run into many issues. Had to reinstall the Nvidia drivers on the game machine. And deal with glances, but I mentioned that before.

I’ll probably update the server to 13 next week.

I had to rewrite part of my php-based photo management system, as it relied on a library that was originally written for php 4 or 5 and hasn’t been updated. Fortunately that wasn’t too hard. There might be other things lurking like that, but they aren’t critical problems - I can deal with them at leisure.
