    The big fat folder with all the important documents I keep in a place that I can get to easily in case there’s a fire.

    I can get new cats, a new PC, etc. It would be tricky to get a new birth certificate from a country that no longer exists. I can easily get new ID and get all my stuff in my wallet with the stuff in the big fat folder.

      There are fireproof briefcases. I think buying one would give you some peace of mind about your papers.

        I’ve looked into those and I don’t think they do much if your entire house burns down, so I’m either able to grab the documents or they’re burning down with the house. I may be wrong, but I think a false peace of mind is probably all they do. I’m probably not running into the fire to grab some documents, so the few extra minutes that fire resistant case would provide doesn’t do much.

        Someone please correct me if I’m off base.

          My understanding is that when a house is on fire,

          • the water damage from the firefighters cause damage.

          • Also the fire is normally “moved” with some fun airflow physics that firefighters learn, so the damage from burning is somewhat contained (hopefully).

          • also a fire burns up, so something insulated underneath where the fire is could last a long time with little damage.

          Based on these reasons, I expect that the briefcase could help keep your documents safe.
