I’ve never been as excited for an app to be released as this one!
Been a sync user since day 1 and I’m looking forward to continuing to support it.
I used RIF, but I remember a lot of people loved sync for reddit, so I plan to jump on the bandwagon.
A fellow RiFugee
I wish they had chosen Lemmy instead. I loved that app and still haven’t had the heart to delete from my phone.
I’ve been using an app called Summit for Lemmy, and it feels very RiF-esque. RiF was the only way I used Reddit, and it’s made the transition very easy. In fact, in some ways, I feel it’s done some quality of life stuff even better than RiF did, like color coding comment chains, which makes it easier to keep track of who’s responding to who.
RiF went to tildes, if you hadn’t heard.
I’d heard that, but I’m not super interested in tildes. Lemmy and the fediverse have been great.
Agreed. I’m moving past the idea of link aggregators in general now. I’m back into RSS now, and skipping the endless scrolling.
Where would I start for RSS? Genuinely…
I’m also curious. What Readers are people using these days? Preferably on android?
Feedly’s been solid after Google killed Google reader. But they’ve been adding features that make it more similar to Flipboard. I’m also looking for something simple and straight to the point.
I’ve been using Read You from F-Droid. It’s still in early-ish development but it’s simple with a clean design.
I use Inoreader and recommend it. I pay for Pro.
I use Feeder, and most sites I’m interested in have RSS feeds discovered if I plug in just the URL of their front page. Other sites can be a bit more of a pain, bit you can often just add /RSS or /feeds to the URL and the readers will work it out.
Freshrss has a self-hosted option or you can sign up to a community driven server.

I went and checked… That’s a mischaracterisation. A lot of people are excited, a lot of people are asking what Lemmy is. Some people are saying it sucks but that’s not the general vibe. There are quite a few people saying they visit both Reddit and Lemmy and enjoy Lemmy a lot more and go there first.
Jives with my own experience, TBH.
I bet a large number of the negative comments only checked out Lemmy the weeks of the protests. I think their critiques are very accurate for that time period. But I think Lemmy now is a lot better than a month ago and a viable alternative to Reddit.
As long as the masses don’t all flock to just one server, the next time reddit fucks up it’ll be a much softer place to land. The only problem is the niche communities and they’re survivability when transferring over.
This really does feel like the early days of reddit. Where small, niche communities have to just keep plugging along until they hit a self-sustaining number of active users, and I didn’t realize how much I missed that till I came here.
It’s so much more personal. It’s way better to get 20 upvotes and 15 comments on a community of 150 than it is to get 1k upvotes on a community of 125k
I tried to explain this during the tumultuous time to people but most of the reaction I got was ‘it didn’t work perfectly the one time I used it so it’s not actually worth more than hot shit’.
Good, honestly. I personally could do without the type of person to write something off as bad on a single individual interaction with something that has a legitimate reason to not operate 100% at perfect level. It’s childish and I would rather those people stay on reddit and ruin THAT place
redacted
They can enjoy the shitty official app
or use patched third party clients
No matter the tutorial, written or video, I can never get a revanced version of any app (Sync & YT) working. In the end I just gave up Reddit and got NewPipe for YT.
IDK about Reddit but I’ve been using ReVanced YouTube ane YouTube Music for a while and it works perfectly. Let me know if you need help getting it set up.
Relay still works for some reason
Pretty sure they are operating at a loss while they roll out a subscription model.
Yep, but I’m willing to bet that the dev negotiated something behind the scenes with Reddit to get extra time. If not, he’s probably racking up some serious API costs as Relay is one of the few remaining third-party apps that works without any modifications.
Why would reddit be lenient? Reddit doesn’t want 3rd party money. if they did they would have put out decent rates that 3rd party apps could actually support and would have generated revenue from all the apps. Their goal was to kill them all and they will. The number of people willing to pay $10-12/mo for a reddit 3rd party client that doesn’t allow NSFW posts is going to be tiny.
Damn, it’s almost like the people that still reddit are the ones you wouldn’t want here in the first place
Anyone still using reddit is a lost cause at this point. They’ve thrown their lot in with reddit’s changes wholly.
Either people didn’t care, and they’re the people Reddit really wants them to be, happy with any greedy corporate decision - or they did care and gave up. Not saying what we’re doing is all that high and mighty, it is just social media after all, but on that note it’s just social media. If you aren’t willing to stick to your morals with these small things then what does that say about you and the big things?
I think there’s still 2 broad categories of people who would drop Reddit in a heartbeat, depending on the circumstances.
Those who are stuck to Reddit because that’s where their community exists, and those who just haven’t been able to get over the threshold of understanding how a federated social media ecosystem works and the onboarding process.
The second category can be solved by making it simple enough for your average tech illiterate user to join a server/Lemmy as a whole, and I think the first just needs a large enough impetus to make a move - once communities hit a certain size, they’ll naturally attract more people.
I know for me, I joined Twitter despite not liking the platform because like 90% of the artists I followed on Tumblr left to go there during mass “female-presenting nipples” exodus. If it hadn’t been for those communities migrating, I never would’ve left. And when I left Twitter when the Muskrat bought it (and later left Reddit), I lost all those communities I joined for in the first place. Many of those artists are either on Twitter or Instagram, and that’s it - and I sure as hell want nothing to do with either platform; and the people from those Reddit communities have scattered to the winds or are still there.
One thing I don’t get though for those who are not happy with reddit but continue to use it is why they continue to keep actively participating.
Reddit and Twitter make it easy for people to not need accounts and provide either direct or indirect rss support, and reddit especially makes it easy to lurk on communities without an account through multisubreddit links for a customized feed without needing instances like nitter.
So sense I get is those who keep actively participating and contributing to reddit instead of going accountless and making steps to reduce their footprint there are ones who never were going to leave. And really was just a case of virtue signaling during the height of the protests.
Its a feature not a bug. They can stay in their corporate containment hellhole far away from the awesome communities on Lemmy.
while they have either A) never tried it or B) they came here for 20 minutes and left
Probably viewed the active local feed and never looked further.
I just got access to Sync for Lemmy! Very nice. I hope the developer of rif would also make a lemmy client.
Seems like the rif dev made an app for tildes instead
Yeah I know. kinda disappointed about that.
It’s one of the downsides of the reddit reckoning: there are so many different fediverse communities/sites now that existing subreddit communities have been split across different sites.
What’s Tildes? Another Reddit clone?
https://tildes.net/ Seems like good quality of discussion, but community is small.
Same, just got the notification!
I’m waiting for Boost since that’s what I was used to, but this looks great too :)
I’m still more a fan of relay which is staying for reddit but this is pretty nice.
And here I am, waiting for a “Lemmy is Fun” app.
Ive found connect is a pretty great alternative if you haven’t already checked it out.
Connect dev here, glad you’re liking it!
It is a great app, thanks for developing Connect.
I use it sometimes, but with the instability of lemmy and being kicked from my login, not having saved logins is really annoying. I finally figured out that my keyboard app has been adding a space to the end of my username because it detects it as a saved word, and I don’t always remember this, so sometimes its a 2-3 attempt process just to log in and use the app.
This is one users 2 cents, I’m not really saying I dislike your app more than I am taking the opportunity to bitch to someone who will listen
I’ve really been enjoying it, although I have a problem with it. I have it set to hide seen posts, and when I try to see the top week posts, it says that there aren’t any. When I try it on wefwef, however, it shows posts. I’m assuming it’s something to do with how the post lookup works, where it will only retrieve a certain amount of posts to show and if I have seen them all, it won’t retrieve more? (wefwef takes a while to retrieve new posts, so I assume that’s what it’s doing)
Former RIF user for over a decade here. Now using connect and is not too bad of a transition.
hell yeah another connect brother
My brother we stand united 🫡
While we’re all talking about Connect (and this could probably be a support post in the community but whatever), is anybody else having an issue that the app isn’t showing all comments? I can get it to show different ones by changing the sort but it doesn’t seem like there is a way to view all comments in a post. I don’t think it’s the result of a block or defederation.
Same same
He’s only making a Tildes app 😞
Isn’t Tildes still invite only and basically denying everyone their application?
No? It doesn’t feel like Reddit / Lemmy though either. I don’t have an account, but it feels really dead compared to Lemmy. I considered switching to Tildes, but the communities are too wide, like there isn’t a Futurama community, just a TV one, there isn’t a Retro games community, just a games one.
It makes sense when you have a small userbase, but I care about niche communities and Lemmy offers that, and some are even slightly alive here.
The user base was also too narrow. It felt like they wanted a specific kind of community, to a place open to just anyone.
You can request an invite by emailing them or posting in the reddit tildes thread
Because my brain is 60-70% walnut, I thought you made a joke about abbreviating Tildes is Fun to TIT.
Tildes is Terrific?
Relay for me. But it looks like Sync finally added swipe gestures so I’ll just use that, since my favorite app isn’t getting a Lemmy port. Connect and Voyager are too clunky for daily use. Can’t wait until Sync launches.
(Edit: I just hope it shows downvote counts, comment previews, and has a tablet mode… Oh and doesn’t refresh the page every time I post something.)
Fellow Relay refugee. I welcome the swipe drawer even though it misses some actions. My biggest grudge is probably scaling. The font sizes are way too small and adjusting them in settings doesn’t seem to adjust them everywhere (e.g. this reply screen I’m looking at right now).
Overall I’m positive. I’ll probably duel-wield Sync and Jerboa and see which one brings the most pleasure.
Waiting for Boost for Lemmy here.
just got sync installed a few minutes ago, feels so good to have a proper UI for endless scrolling now :)
Same! Found this using Jerboa app, it’s OK but so far this feels a bit more… I don’t know, user friendly or something
Sync has had over 10 years to refine the user experience.
Reddit is making the same mistake that 3DFX made against Nvidia and ATI back in the day with third party developers. Restricting 3rd party development was suicidal on reddit’s part.
Ultimately, people want choices, and I think if the average user see only one reddit app vs a literal wall of different Lemmy apps, they will be inclined to try at least one Lemmy app instead.
I disagree that the majority of people want choices, at least when it comes to social media. The vast majority of social media users want to be where the user base is at. For Lemmy to be the more attractive option, it either needs to have do similar numbers to it’s competitor or offer something very unique and useful that the others don’t.
And I say this as someone who has been much happier on Lemmy than I have been the last few years on Reddit.
I’m perfectly okay of those types of social media users go somewhere else. They like what they like, I like what I like.
Downloaded just now, looks great! But I don’t really enjoy the subscription model. Why not make one lifetime purchase of let’s say $20 or something? Monthly or yearly payments are a no for me. But paying even a little bit more for a lifetime would be working.
Exactly what I came here to say. I had purchased Sync Ultra (or whatever it was called) in the reddit app and was really happy with the experience. First thing I went to do upon installing the new one was go to purchase again and was really disappointed to see a monthly subscription and no one-time purchases option. Then I was even more disappointed to see ads in the feed. I mean, I get why the developer went this route, but it really sucks. I don’t want another running subscription to think about. I have enough of those as it is.
I might be mistaken, but I don’t think Sync Ultra is the same thing as the ad-free sync premium. Sync Ultra is a subscription because it adds functionality that requires cloud resources, not just removes ads.
Sync ultra in the original reddit app had a one-time payment option as well.
Give me Sync NotQuiteUltra without cloud garbage and just charge me the 1 time fee then.
What functionality?
Alternatively, Sync had so many updates that paying for Ultra once so many years ago felt like I stole it. It’s like $17 a year? I could do that easily to support the dev.
Same here, would buy the lifetime purchase straight away but holding off on the subscription, given the ad-free experience is the only thing I care about.
A one-time Lifetime payment option would be phenomenal.
I’m not a fan of subscriptions either but come on, it’s 17 dollars a year.
Also please ditch the Google Play billing. It’s the reason I had to switch to Relay for Reddit, because I simply won’t have the spyware, that is Google Play Services, on my phone.
I get that lifetime subscriptions are much more palatable to users but I don’t think it works if you consider that users will want lifetime support as well. So for maybe 20$ you’ll get theoretically years of even decennias of support, ignoring inflation, new bugs and security concerns, etc. It just doesn’t make sense and I wouldn’t expect it from a dev.
This.
Just downloaded. I have not been this happy for months.
Happy more notable support is joining but I think it will be hard for me to leave Voyager (tAfka Wefwef) at this point.
Absolutely, the way the Voyager team has pushed out updates and made this app comparable to Apollo in a month has been incredible.
Even if Christian from Apollo did decide to make an app on Lemmy I still probably wouldn’t leave Voyager.
Voyager is like an open source Apollo. It’s incredible
As a former Sync user, I do miss the markdown help. But otherwise it’s tight
I’m sure it will come. Here’s an open issue where the dev has responded https://github.com/aeharding/voyager/issues/367

In case anyone doesn’t know yet, there is a iOS testflight app available. For me the haptics that is not present in the webapp made it so much more enjoyable to use.
How do you install voyager? Is it on the Play Store?
Not yet, you can build it from the GitHub source but it’s a mainly a web app for any platform. We’re trying to talk the dev into putting it up on F-Droid as well.
You install it as a webapp from your browser.
Since you’re on lemmy.world, you can use m.lemmy.world
I’ve wanted Reddit to burn for awhile. It devolved into nothing but a circle jerk.
Good thing Lemmy instances aren’t made from much smaller communities where everyone has more or less the same opinion…
Unless Lemmy would be considered more of an echo chamber for their respective communities versus a circlejerk?
I’d argue that individual instances aren’t all that important. Im on a smaller instances and hardly ever bump into people from my own instance.
When instances start defederating and closing some instances off, I could see, but even then those users would just make another account elsewhere to participate in the “all” of lemmy
I hardly bump into people. Period. Most I see are posts with zero engagement
It took like 12 years for reddit to become full circle jerk? Maybe we get a good 7-10 from lemmy
Dicks out
Unlike Lemmy where, god forbid, someone has a center or right wing opinion?
Edit: welp…
It’s not just centre or right opinions, anything that’s not full on Stalinist genocide is downvoted and reported furiously. Basically the same shit as on Reddit.
“Why is everyone persecuting me for having a different opinion?!” they cried.
Check out their comment history for context. Such insightful tidbits as “every leftist should be in jail”, “Go live in North Korea”, and my favorite, “wut, are you an idiot?”.
It’s the same shit as Reddit because you’re the same shit on both platforms.
Yeah, if you’re supporting genocidal regimes, go live in North Korea. You don’t belong in a civilised society with such logic.
So hyped for this. I’ve completely moved on from Reddit and this will help solidify the decision. All the screenshots of the app up til now look really good.
If spez wasn’t such a petty hurensohn this wouldn’t have happened.
This is a good point. Kudos to Spez!
This is where reddit messed up. Third party apps are priceless to certain users. Different flavors of apps and choices will bring in more users etc. These third party apps may have indeed been the digg moment reddit has been toying with for years.
Im Loving this so much
Never been so excited for an app install lol
Why is financial info / purchase history collected?
To check your in-app purchases / subscriptions.
Sync can only check its own purchase history.
It looks like there will be a paid version via an in-app purchase, so I imagine that this permission is used for license validation between installs.
EDIT: From the data safety page:
Data collected and for what purpose
Purchase history
App functionality, Account managementRight now there’s an IAP for Sync Ultra that is monthly or annual
I went to pre register Sync and saw the list of data it collects. It turned me off. I will just keep using Connect for Lemmy.
