1·11 days agoThe diversity of terrains out west is just unreal, and anything near volcanic sites just completely throws you for a loop when you see it… One really good spot to see some otherworldly terrain is Craters of the Moon National Monument out in Idaho. It’s all on top of a bunch of lava tubes and flows; was where the original moon mission trained to get used to the terrain. It’s kind of in the middle of nowhere though, I usually hit it up going from Oregon to the Grand Tetons as its not too far of a detour. At some point I’ll have some posts on the trails there, I’d post a preview now but I’m kind of going through all of my photos as I go along.

4·12 days agoI believe it is bum-pass, but I absolutely read it as bump-ass.

2·12 days agoIt’s crazy how different the two seem, especially since this one has more time since it happened. I’d imagine it’s a combination of the more arid environment and the crazy high winds they get out here.

1·14 days agoI’ll probably be doing a little bit of jumping around as I switch between 2023 and 2024 (and probably some older ones as well) as I think I’m going to go through all of the fall/winter photos before looping around to spring/summer hikes after that as its more seasonally relevant for now. It’ll still be kind of grouped together though so its not just back and forth everyday.

2·15 days agoYeah, the first time I ever saw it I was just looking for a quick bathroom break while headed south. Was a great surprise!

2·15 days agoYeah, it’s a great quick stop like 100 yards off 101, picnic tables at the small park as well and no park pass required.

pics@lemmy.world•Humbug Mountain Trail, Port Orford, Oregon
2·16 days agoNot terrible iirc, early on you hear it, and then the trail of tucks in to the mountain which blocks a lot of the noise. It’s a steady enough incline that you’ll hear your heartbeat over a lot of traffic as well haha. But the area where I took the photo looking towards Port Orford, which is near the top you could clearly hear it before it goes away again at the more ocean facing summit. Unsure of the southern side of the trail as it was temporarily closed when I was there.

pics@lemmy.world•Tall Trees Grove, Redwoods National Park, California
3·19 days agoThis was also the final hike I did down in the Redwoods, so the next set will be headed back up along the Oregon coast, before doing another time jump. Should freshen up the posts a little, as although the Redwoods are amazing, seeing tall trees every day repeatedly gets a little samey.

2·25 days agoHaha, just wait, one of these Redwoods trails I’ll get to was actually the location for the filming of Endor. Although I don’t have any specific shots that line up with the movie (they had permits for off trail in the area), I’ll be mentioning it. Same goes for a scene from Jurassic Park, although I can’t remember if I went to that location during this trip down to the Redwoods.

pics@lemmy.world•Castle Rock Island Viewing along Pebble Beach, Crescent City, CA
3·28 days agoYou should absolutely get there sometime if you can, there is such a great mix of wildly different sights. There is some truly epic coastline around there. If you go and have a little extra time, heading north into Oregon has some really great coast as well and a lot of the views going that way are as you rise up above the cliffs along 101.

3·30 days agoThanks! Yeah, it’s really hard to convey the feeling you get surrounded by these absolutely massive trees. That coastline around Crescent city is so pretty; it’s great all around the CA/OR area but the Castle Island stuff is just so great.

5·30 days agoMost of this run of Redwood photos are going to be shot on an Ultra-wide lens (Rokinon 14mm 2.4f) I got for myself as a birthday present at the turn of the year. That’s how I’m able to get so much of the tree at once, but also causes some stretching of what’s in the photo. So in person, the trees are a little fatter and a little shorter, but still crazy tall.

1·30 days agoYeah, everything I post is done by me, and more or less every day. Although sometimes its more that I’ll do two or three shorter ones in a day and then there are times where I’ll have a few days off for whatever reason.
It isn’t a term used to describe them, was a total brain fart on my end. Meant to say side by side.
One good thing about a lot of waterfalls is some of the best one’s provide pretty easy access for people with mobility issues. They will often times have paved paths of 1/4 mile or less from the parking area. If you’re in the us or canada, let me know your region and I may have a few ideas for places they could enjoy.
